About
Alex Barsom is a Coptic-American composer whose music fuses all the diverse, disparate parts of his identity into a cohesive sound that represents his lived experience. From genre-bending electronic music to intimate and subtle flavorings of Egyptian folk and classical music, Alex hopes to reflect back to the listener an understanding that all of the pieces of themselves - though they may seem mismatched and unfitting at times - can find a place with one another to create a beautifully individual and deeply meaningful sense of self.
Alex’s pieces have won him recognition in both national and international competitions, and his affinity for vocal music has earned him commissions from numerous vocalists. Recently, his solo cello piece, “Wail On,” was selected as a winner in SOLI Chamber Ensembles’ 30x30x30 project. He has had the opportunity to collaborate with renowned artists such as JACK Quartet, Orchestra Senzaspine and the Carpe Diem String Quartet at Chigiana Academy, Dogs of Desire under the direction of David Allen Miller at Albany Symphony, Yarn/Wire Ensemble, the Delgani String Quartet, Quatuor Diotima, and Aperture Duo.
Alex recently completed his Master’s degree in composition with Christopher Cerrone at Mannes College of Music, and he earned his Bachelor’s degree at UCLA, where he studied with Richard Danielpour, Kay Rhie, David Lefkowitz and Ian Krouse. He is now composing, performing and teaching in Brooklyn, NY.
