I’m On Fire
As this is the first string quartet I have written, I wanted to draw from a significant and meaningful source of inspiration. I began writing this piece at home during the beginning of quarantine, a time of extreme uncertainty and tension for many people. Inevitably and on every scale, from individual to regional to international, we face moments where we feel completely smothered by difficulty and chaos. It may feel as if the world is on fire in these times, and even if we are not directly caught in the flames, the smoke may suffocate us. However, this same process is often optimistically seen as a rebirth, as it allows us to become better through learning from the mistakes that led to problematic circumstances. I hope to depict the difficulty of our current times through this piece, but also to convey hope for a better world emerging as a result.
